The company started life as a printed paper bag manufacturer in 1970 when it was founded by the Gatward family, but it soon moved into wallpaper production. Hiring designers John Wilman and Linda Beard, they developed a range which was similar to the classic fashion look developed by Welsh entrepreneur Laura Ashley.
