Morris
Morris wallpapers were introduced by William Morris in London in the second half of the 19th century, when he was one of the most influential designers, as well as being a political theorist, scholar, translator, publisher, environmental campaigner, writer and poet. As you can deduce from that list he was a remarkable man, but it is as a designer of wallpaper and fabric that he had most impact.
Under his personal direction Morris and Company grew into a flourishing and fashionable decorating firm, and he remains best known for his wallpaper designs. His wallpaper and fabric creations have never been out of production since he produced his first wallpaper is 1864 and his classic designs remain beautiful and enduringly timeless, appealing to a wide range of people and equally at home in an historic house or a modern one.
Sanderson purchased Morris and Co in 1927, including the showroom contents, the entire collection of wallpaper printing blocks, stock and complete colour records, including both unique logbooks and hundreds of match-pieces (print templates). The printing blocks are still used today. Morris & Co continues to guarantee authentic versions of those designs, alongside new interpretations, using innovations in printing and weaving technology to create up-to-date wallpaper designs.
