Originating from Brazil, the Calathea, also known as the “Prayer Plant,” gained popularity for illustration in the late 19th century because of its striking decorative leaves. Its unique growth pattern, resembling two striped columns across the fabric’s width, provided a canvas for finely painted botanical greens against a white background.
