William Morris At Home Wallpaper

The legacy of William Morris

William Morris was one of the leading figures of the nineteenth-century Arts and Crafts movement, which promoted craftsmanship, thoughtful design and the use of natural forms in interiors.

His wallpaper and textile designs were often built around flowers, leaves, branches, fruit and birds, arranged in carefully balanced repeating patterns. Rather than treating nature literally, Morris translated it into structured decorative designs that could cover an entire wall without losing their rhythm.

Many of these patterns remain immediately recognisable more than a century later.

Iconic William Morris wallpaper designs

Several William Morris designs have become classics of British interiors.

Strawberry Thief is perhaps the most famous. It features birds among strawberries and curling foliage, creating a dense, richly detailed pattern with a strong Arts and Crafts character.

Willow Bough uses flowing willow leaves in a gentler repeating design, making it easier to use across larger areas.

Acanthus is bolder and more architectural, with large curling leaves that create a stronger sense of movement across the wall.

Other popular designs include Blackthorn, Bird & Pomegranate, Pimpernel, Dove & Rose and Acorn, all of which draw heavily on the natural world. World of Wallpaper currently carries these and other archive-inspired designs within its William Morris At Home collection.

Floral, botanical and nature-inspired wallpaper

Nature is central to the Morris style.

Flowers and foliage are rarely used as isolated motifs. Instead, stems, leaves, blossoms and birds tend to interlock across the design, creating a continuous pattern with very little unused space.

This makes Morris wallpaper particularly effective in rooms where you want the walls to become part of the overall interior rather than simply providing a neutral background.

Bedrooms, dining rooms, studies and living rooms can all work well with these designs, especially where natural materials such as wood, linen and wool are already part of the scheme.

Traditional designs in modern interiors

Although the patterns originated in the nineteenth century, Morris designs are not limited to traditional houses.

In a period property, deeper greens, reds and blues can reinforce the historic character of the room. In a more contemporary home, softer colours and simpler furnishings can make the same wallpaper feel much cleaner and less formal.

One of the easiest ways to use a detailed Morris pattern in a modern setting is to keep the surrounding furniture relatively simple and allow the wallpaper to provide most of the decoration.

Smaller rooms can also suit these patterns surprisingly well. Cloakrooms, studies and hallways are often good places to use a stronger design because the wallpaper can give a relatively compact space much more character.

Choosing a Morris wallpaper

The scale and density of the pattern are usually the first things to consider.

Larger designs such as Acanthus make a strong visual statement and benefit from enough wall space for the repeat to be appreciated. More flowing patterns such as Willow Bough can feel quieter and are often easier to use across several walls.

Colour makes just as much difference. The same pattern can feel traditional in a dark green or deep red colourway and considerably lighter in sage, blue or neutral shades.

It is worth comparing several colourways before deciding, and ordering a sample is particularly useful with detailed wallpaper. Screen colours can vary, and a pattern may appear quite different once seen at full scale in the room.

Our current Morris collection includes designs from the William Morris At Home range, which revisits original archive patterns in colourways intended for contemporary interiors.

The collection retains the botanical detail and repeating structures associated with Morris while offering a broader choice of softer blues, greens, neutrals and more modern combinations alongside the traditional heritage colours.
