Laura Ashley Wallpaper

A British interiors name with a long history

Laura Ashley began in the 1950s, when Laura and Bernard Ashley started producing hand-printed textiles from their London home. What began with printed scarves developed into one of Britain’s best-known home and fashion brands, strongly associated with floral fabrics, decorative interiors and an informal country style. That heritage is still visible throughout the wallpaper collection today. Flowers, foliage, birds, damasks and traditional decorative motifs remain central to the range, although the colour palettes and scale vary considerably from design to design.

The result is a collection that can work in period properties, cottages and traditional interiors, but also in newer homes where a softer or more decorative finish is wanted.

Floral and botanical Laura Ashley wallpapers

Floral wallpaper remains one of Laura Ashley’s strongest areas.

Some designs use small repeated flowers for a quieter, more traditional look, while others feature larger blooms and trailing plants that can become the main decorative feature of a room.

Botanical patterns extend beyond conventional florals too. Leaves, branches, trees and garden-inspired designs appear throughout the range, often in soft greens, chalky blues and muted natural shades.

These designs tend to work particularly well in bedrooms, living rooms and dining rooms, although lighter botanical patterns can also be very effective in hallways and smaller rooms.

Popular Laura Ashley wallpaper designs

Several Laura Ashley patterns have become particularly recognisable.

Josette is one of the best-known examples, with its elegant damask-style pattern available in a range of colourways including neutrals, blues and greys.

Summer Palace has a more decorative character, using flowers, birds and foliage to create a traditional garden-inspired design.

Pussy Willow is softer and more understated, while patterns such as Wisteria, Peacock and Magnolia Grove bring stronger botanical and nature-led elements into the collection. World of Wallpaper currently features many of these designs within its Laura Ashley range. World of Wallpaper

The same pattern can often look very different depending on the colourway, so it is worth comparing several versions before deciding.

Blue, green, pink and neutral colourways

Colour is a major part of the Laura Ashley look.

Blue and duck-egg shades are particularly common and work well with both traditional furniture and lighter contemporary interiors. Greens range from soft sage tones to deeper botanical shades, while pinks and blush colours give many of the floral patterns a warmer feel.

Neutral wallpapers are useful where you want pattern without making the walls dominate the room. Cream, linen, chalk and soft grey backgrounds can make quite detailed designs feel considerably calmer.

For stronger interiors, metallic details, darker blues and richer floral colourways can create much more impact.

Damask, stripe and decorative designs

Laura Ashley is not limited to floral wallpaper.

The range also includes damask patterns, stripes, textured designs and more formal decorative motifs. These can be particularly useful in dining rooms, hallways and bedrooms where a full floral scheme might feel too busy.

Striped papers can also work well alongside more elaborate Laura Ashley patterns, either within the same room or elsewhere in the house, helping create a more coordinated interior without repeating the same design everywhere.

Choosing Laura Ashley wallpaper for your room

A useful starting point is to decide how much pattern you want.

Large florals and highly decorative designs tend to work best when you are happy for the wallpaper to become a major part of the room. Smaller repeats and softer botanical patterns are easier to use across several walls and often sit more quietly behind furniture and artwork.

Room size matters too. A large repeat does not automatically require a large room, but it is worth considering how much of the pattern will actually be visible once furniture, windows and doors are taken into account.

Colour should be judged in the room itself wherever possible. Natural and artificial light can change how blues, greens and neutrals appear, so ordering a sample before decorating is usually worthwhile.
